Government Responds to Industry Concerns About Dumped Steel Imports

The Government today announced that it will examine Canadian steel industry complaints that unfairly priced imports of certain steel products are having a negative effect on its operations in Canada.

In accordance with World Trade Organization rules, Canada will use its trade remedy law to respond to evidence of harmful dumping and subsidization brought forward by the industry.

In response to an industry complaint, the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) announced today that it has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into imports of concrete reinforcing bar from Indonesia, Japan, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, Chinese Taipei and Ukraine. Some importers identified in this case were involved in a previous anti-dumping case on concrete reinforcing bar from different countries. Concurrent with the initiation of this case, the Government has enhanced reporting under its steel import monitoring system to allow for weekly identification of any surges in imports.
