Ottawa, February 5, 1999 Finance Minister Announces Federal Budget DateFinance Minister Paul Martin today announced that he will present the 1999 federal budget in the House of Commons at approximately 4:15 p.m. EST on Tuesday, February 16, 1999. Mr. Martin noted that, as for past budgets, this budget may contain measures that take effect on budget day. In this event, such measures may be effective from midnight Monday, February 15, the day preceding the budget presentation. The practice of proposing measures effective on budget day follows the procedure adopted in prior years and ensures uniform application of budget measures to transactions entered into on that day, wherever the transactions occur in Canada. This announcement provides appropriate notice so that interested parties can take this into account in planning their financial affairs. To ensure the widest possible access to information, all Department of Finance publications are now available free of charge on the Department's Internet home page at www.fin.gc.ca . This includes the 1999 budget documents, which will be made available shortly after tabling of the budget in the House of Commons on February 16, 1999. Printed copies of the budget technical document will be available at a cost of $26.75 (includes GST), while copies of The Budget Speech and The Budget in Brief will be available free of charge. The order form may be downloaded from the Department of Finance Internet home page at www.fin.gc.ca, or may be obtained by calling the Department's Distribution Centre at (613) 943-8665. ___________________ Jean-Michel Catta |
