Ottawa, July 8, 1999 Finance Department Releases Public Opinion ResearchThe Department of Finance today released the results of public opinion research commissioned by the department in recent months. This material includes research conducted in November 1998 on the attitudes of Canadians towards employment insurance. The research was part of a broader study that also examined the views of the public towards bank mergers. Results of the bank merger portion of the survey were released on December 22, 1998. Also included in the material released today is a February 1999 survey of Canadians' attitudes towards the 1999 federal budget, as well as seven surveys conducted for Canada Investment and Savings (CI&S) between January and April 1999. The research conducted for CI&S examines various Canada Savings Bond campaign issues and products. All of the surveys released today were designed by Earnscliffe Research & Communications with the field results collected and tabulated by Ekos Research and Associates Inc. The release of this material is in line with the government's practice of making polling information available to the public. The Department of Finance regularly undertakes public opinion research to gauge the views of Canadians on a wide range of economic and fiscal issues. Copies of the research may be obtained by contacting the Department of Finance's Public Affairs and Operations Division at the telephone number shown below. The research is available only in the language in which it was provided (English) and is not available on the department's Web site. ___________________ For further information: Harry Adams |
