Ottawa, February 10, 1997
Secretary of State (Finance) Doug Peters announced today that he will not be seeking
re-election in his riding of Scarborough East in the next Federal election
Mr. Peters stated that it has been a great honour to serve the people of Scarborough East as their Member of Parliament. He said, "I want to thank my many supporters and all the people of Scarborough East for their confidence in me and for their faith in me as their Member of Parliament".
Mr. Peters also stated that it has been a privilege to be a Minister in the Chrétien Government, a government that has brought back integrity to public office. He said, "Prime Minister Chrétien has led an honest and resourceful government, a government that Canadians can be proud of. It is a government that is the envy of the world for its effective attack on the fiscal front, for its successful efforts to balance a serious international trade and finance problem, while still protecting Canada's social programs".
Mr. Peters will continue to work for the re-election of a Liberal government whenever the next election is called.
