Survey Report on Tax-Inclusive Pricing Released

The Department of Finance today released a report on a public opinion survey conducted in January concerning consumers' attitudes towards tax-inclusive pricing under the new Harmonized Sales Tax.

The survey involved 610 telephone interviews with residents in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador where the Harmonized Sales Tax takes effect April 1, 1997.

The report and analysis of the results were prepared by Ekos Research Associates Ltd. which also conducted the fieldwork and tabulation for the survey.

The survey found that 79 per cent of respondents supported tax-inclusive pricing, and up to 70 per cent were in favour of the proposed tax-inclusive pricing options released by the participating governments in January.

Releasing the report is in line with the government's approach to making polling information available to the public. Copies of the report can be obtained on request from the Distribution Centre at (613) 995-2855.
