Canada Plans U.S. Dollar Global Bond Issue

Secretary of State Jim Peterson, on behalf of the Minister of Finance, Paul Martin, today announced that, subject to market conditions, Canada plans to issue a global offering of US$1 billion 5-year bonds for simultaneous distribution in Asia, Europe and North America. Merrill Lynch, Nesbitt Burns and Salomon Brothers will be the joint leads and bookrunners for the issue. The remainder of the syndicate will be made up of a group of Canadian and international firms.

Secretary of State Peterson said favourable market conditions are providing an opportunity to refinance maturing liabilities in Canada's foreign exchange reserve portfolio.
