Ottawa, May 23, 1996 Government Appoints New Member to Technical Committee on Business TaxationFinance Minister Paul Martin today announced the appointment of James Cowan, Q.C. to the Technical Committee on Business Taxation. Mr. Cowan, a lawyer, is a partner in Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales of Halifax. In addition to his professional activities, Mr. Cowan has been active in community, regional and national public policy organizations. The Technical Committee on Business Taxation, announced in the March 6, 1996 federal budget, was established to consider ways in which Canada's business taxation system could contribute more to the creation of jobs. The Committee, chaired by Dr. Jack Mintz, has already begun its deliberations. Mr. Martin noted with deep regret the untimely passing last month of Gerry Godsoe, who was one of the original nine committee members. A list of the Committee's current membership is attached.
