Ottawa, January 12, 2004 Minister of Finance Seeks Priorities of Canadians at Launch of Pre-Budget ConsultationsRelated document: Minister of Finance Ralph Goodale today asked Canadians to speak out on priorities the federal government must consider in preparing the 2004 budget in a time of fiscal constraint. "Good government is about living within our means," Minister Goodale said in an address to the Regina & District Chamber of Commerce at the launch of his pre-budget consultations. "It is about fiscal discipline and balanced budgets, respect for the taxpayer’s hard-earned money, careful spending, prudent management, transparency, accountability and value for money." In his address Minister Goodale outlined the Government’s need for sound finances in the midst of slowing economic growth, noting private sector forecasters expect growth of 1.6 per cent in 2003, half the growth projected in last year’s budget. "I trust the wisdom of Canadians to provide astute guidance," said Minister Goodale. "That’s what these consultations are all about." Minister Goodale said Canadians will be asked four questions at each pre-budget consultation:
