Ottawa, July 22, 2004 Minister of Finance Welcomes New G-7 DeputyMinister of Finance Ralph Goodale today officially welcomed Associate Deputy Minister of Finance Paul Boothe to his new duties as Canada’s G-7 Deputy. Mr. Boothe, who joined the Department of Finance as Associate Deputy Minister on June 1, 2004, is replacing Mark Carney. "Paul brings a wealth of experience and insight to this important post," said Minister Goodale. "As G-7 Deputy he will play a major role in steering Canada through numerous critical international issues." Mr. Boothe came to the Department of Finance from the University of Alberta, where he was a professor of economics. After pursuing undergraduate studies in economics at the University of Western Ontario, Mr. Boothe earned his doctorate at the University of British Columbia. He has also worked in the International Department of the Bank of Canada and as Deputy Minister of Finance and Secretary to Treasury Board for the Government of Saskatchewan. Minister Goodale made special mention of Mr. Carney’s contribution as interim G-7 Deputy. "Mark took on a complex job and in a very short time made great progress moving Canada’s priorities forward within the G-7. His hard work is very much appreciated." Mr. Carney, who assumed the post on a secondment basis in December 2003, is a Deputy Governor at the Bank of Canada. He is returning to his duties at the Bank. __________________
