Canada’s New Government Marks 60th Anniversary of Canada Savings Bonds

The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, participated in a celebration at the Canadian Museum of Civilization to mark the 60th year of Canada Savings Bonds. The special event, entitled “Creating Opportunities for 60 years,” coincides with the launch of the 2006-07 Canada Savings Bonds sales campaign, which began today and continues through to April 1, 2007.

“Canada Savings Bonds have become a part of our national fabric, providing people with a secure and affordable way to meet short-term and long-term financial goals,” said Minister Flaherty. “Investing in bonds and giving bonds as gifts have become a Canadian tradition that has been handed down from generation to generation. Congratulations on 60 successful years.”

Minister Flaherty was joined by colleagues and special guests including David A. Dodge, the Governor of the Bank of Canada, Canadian war bride Mrs. Jean Spear, and youth storytellers Samantha Nielsen and Nicolas Tassé to celebrate the savings vehicle, first launched after the Second World War.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Canada Savings Bonds, the 2006-07 certificates have been redesigned and bear images of the Canadian War Museum and Cenotaph.

Also launched today was the 60th Anniversary Virtual Legacy Exhibit. This unique on-line exhibit, developed with the support of the Currency Museum of the Bank of Canada and the Virtual Museum of Canada, showcases personal stories, images, advertisements and other highlights of 60 years of the Canada Savings Bond program. The exhibit can be viewed at www.csb.gc.ca and is included on the Virtual Museum of Canada website at www.virtualmuseum.ca.
