Message from the President of the Public Service Human Resources Management Agency of Canada

On behalf of the Public Service Human Resources Management Agency of Canada (PSHRMAC), I am pleased to announce the launch of the Accelerated Executive Development Program (AEXDP) selection process and to invite you to consider submitting your application.

In the context of public service renewal, the objectives of the AEXDP are to identify a representative group of executives at the EX-1 to EX-3 level who demonstrate strong leadership potential, and to invest in their development and progression. The Program aims to attract executives who aspire to a high level of excellence and key senior roles in the federal public service. Participants must be motivated to invest in their development during the Program and be willing to contribute to the public service for a period of ten years, which includes four to five years spent on the Program and an equivalent contribution upon completion of the Program.

The AEXDP promotes diversity and bilingualism, focuses on development and learning, facilitates career progression and develops future leaders. For instance, 76 per cent of participants have moved to a new department and 66 per cent to a different type of work, which has broadened their experience and has made them highly successful in their careers. Additionally, a significant number of AEXDP graduates have advanced to positions at the assistant deputy minister level.

Participants in the program develop their leadership competencies through a learning and developmental framework established in partnership with the Canada School of Public Service. Working with departments and agencies, the Program provides quality assignments which promote horizontality and challenge participants to enhance their skills and diversify their experience. The Program also works closely with departments and agencies to ensure that the opportunities for participant assignment and placement are closely integrated with departmental and corporate human resources and business plans.

For this launch, while we are continuing with the AEXDP general stream, we are adding specialist streams for the finance and human resources communities.

The selection process for the AEXDP is based on established program requirements and is guided by the values of fairness, access and transparency. Applicants' leadership competencies, their learning potential and suitability for the AEXDP are assessed with a variety of tools. The results of these assessments form the basis for recommending acceptance to the AEXDP.

As you consider your readiness to pursue this challenge, you should seek the advice of your current assistant deputy minister, deputy minister, and other senior officials with whom you have worked in the past. You should also ask yourself if you are ready to continue to contribute to the public service for a period of ten years, which includes four to five years spent on the program and an equivalent contribution upon completion of the program. In order to continue to foster equitable representation in the AEXDP, executives who are members of visible minority groups, Aboriginal peoples, women, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

I encourage you to read all of the AEXDP launch information, in particular the Application Guide, which provides all the information you need to apply for the AEXDP. In the interim, should you require additional information, or if you wish to consult an AEXDP executive advisor to discuss your application and the implications of your participation in the Program at this point in your career, you may contact the AEXDP Executive Advisor responsible for your department or agency at http://www.hrma-agrh.gc.ca/aexdp/common/contact-us_e.asp.
