Moving Forward Together With Good Practices
The Public Service Human Resources Management Agency of Canada will present
the second Forum on Official Languages
Good Practices. This year’s theme is Moving Forward Together With Good
Practices. The Forum will be held on Friday, December 1, 2006 from 8:00 a.m.
to 12:15 p.m. at the Government Conference Centre, Main Hall, 2 Rideau Street,
Ottawa, Ontario.

Three Good Practices - Language of Work
We added three new good practices on language
of work from Agri-food and Agriculture Canada, Statistics Canada and the
Canadian Transport Agency.

One Official Languages Good Practice to Share – Initiatives from the
Immigration and Citizenship Canada
We added one new good practice to
encourage potential immigrants to settle in Francophones communities. The
activities are posted under the section "Service to the Public".

We added three new good practices. The first one from Parks Canada is posted under the section
"Leadership", the second from the National Arts Centre is posted under the section
"Learning Retention", and the third one from the Translation Bureau of the Public Works and Government Services Canada is posted under the section
"Products".

2006 Public Service Award of Excellence – Official Languages Component
The Public Service of Canada honoured its outstanding employees with the Public Service Award of Excellence at a ceremony in Ottawa last June.
In the official languages category, the prize was awarded to the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACAO) Official Languages Committee, New Brunswick Region.

Making Your Organization Bilingual – a guide and practical tools developed at Canadian Heritage
Canadian Heritage has created a site offering a host of tools and strategies for organizations that
want to foster a new bilingual corporate culture and for those who would like
to improve the services they already offer in Canada's two official languages.
Though developed for the not-for-profit sector, the material is general enough
to be adaptable to the needs of private or public-sector organizations.

Qualification Standards in Relation to Official Languages
The Public Service Human Resources Management Agency of Canada (PSHRMAC) has been responsible for qualifications standards in relation to official languages since December 31, 2005.
Pursuant to Section 31(1) of the Public Service Employment
Act, Treasury Board, as the employer, is responsible for establishing qualification standards in relation to education, knowledge, experience, occupational certification, language or other qualifications considered necessary or desirable regarding the nature of the work to be performed and the present and future needs of the public service. PSHRMAC will develop as needed and maintain these standards on behalf of the employer.
For use in departments and agencies in the core public administration, the Treasury Board has approved the adoption of:
- the Qualification Standards in Relation to Official Languages, formerly known as the Public Service Commission’s General Second Official Language Qualifications and Qualifications Requiring Code P.
The Qualification Standards in Relation to Official Languages outline the different levels of official language proficiency required for bilingual positions in the core public administration.
