European Commission on Preservation and Access (ECPA)
The ECPA promotes activities aimed at keeping collections in European archives and libraries accessible over time and acts as a European platform for discussion and cooperation of heritage organizations in areas of preservation and access.

Preserving Access to Digital Information (PADI) 
National Library of Australia
PADI acts as a subject gateway to digital preservation resources, providing mechanisms to ensure that preservation and future access are considered when managing digital information. PADI also provides a forum for cooperation on the promotion of access to digital information.

Archiving
International Council on Archives (ICA)
ICA is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting the preservation, development, and use of the world's archival heritage. It brings together national archive administrations, professional associations of archivists, regional and local archives and archives of other organisations as well as individual archivists. ICA works closely with inter-governmental organisations such as UNESCO and the Council of Europe. It also has strong links with other non-governmental organisations.

Legal Deposit: Preserving Canada's Heritage
Library and Archives Canada
Legal Deposit is the means by which a comprehensive national collection is gathered together as a record of the nation's published heritage. Canadian publishers are required to send copies of all the materials they publish to the National Library of Canada.

A Metadata Approach to Preservation of Digital Resources: The University of North Texas Libraries' Experience

Preserving long-term access to digital information resources is one of the key challenges facing libraries and information centres today. This paper discusses the issues related to digital resources preservation and demonstrates the role of preservation metadata in facilitating the preservation activities in general. In particular, it describes the efforts being made by the University of North Texas libraries to ensure the long-term access and preservation of various digital information resources.

Projects and Initiatives
CAMiLEON (Creative Archiving at Michigan & Leeds: Emulating the Old on the New)
The CAMiLEON Project is developing and evaluating a range of technical strategies for the long-term preservation of digital materials.  User evaluation studies and a preservation cost analysis are providing answers as to when and where these strategies will be used.

Canadian Century Research Infrastructure
Institute of Canadian Studies
One of the most comprehensive humanities and social science research projects in Canadian history, the Canadian Century Research Infrastructure is a five-year pan-Canadian initiative to develop databases from manuscript census records for the 1911-1951 period. These databases will then be linked to other databases that cover the periods from 1871 to 1901 and from 1961 to 2001. The result will be a new foundation for the study of social, economic, cultural, and political change.

Canadian Initiative on Digital Libraries
E-Preservation: Preserving Digital Information in Canada
E-preservation was developed through a co-operative effort between the National Library of Canada and the Canadian Initiative on Digital Libraries (CIDL). E-preservation is intended to provide Canadians with easy access to policies and research on the creation, use and preservation of digital collections. Included in this project are digital resources from libraries, archives and museums. The site focuses mainly on Canadian initiatives, and complements the international Web site Preserving Access to Digital Information (PADI), produced by the National Library of Australia.

Digital Preservation Testbed
The goal of the Digital Preservation Testbed project is to guarantee the lasting accessibility of trustworthy government information in the digital era. The emphasis here is on the preservation of this information. The Testbed is researching three different approaches to long term digital preservation in particular: Migration, Emulation and XML. Not only will the effectiveness of each approach be evaluated, but also their limits, costs, and application potential.

E-Collection: Preserving Federal Publications for Long-Term Access

Since 1994, the National Library has been collecting, organizing, and providing access to electronic publications created by federal departments. During this time the Library has established partnerships with 37 federal organizations, has collected over 6000 titles, and has created a guide to best practices for Canadian publishers. This session will provide you with an overview of this innovative project and describe the challenges currently being addressed.

ERPANET - Electronic Resource Preservation and Access Network
The ERPANET project aims to establish an expandable and self-sustaining European Initiative, which will serve as a virtual clearinghouse and knowledge base in the area of preservation of cultural heritage and scientific digital objects. The dominant feature of ERPANET will be the exchanging of knowledge on state-of-the-art developments in digital preservation and the transfer of expertise among individuals and institutions.

Risk Management
Preservation Risk Management for Web Resources

This article describes current Web preservation efforts by libraries and archives and suggests how a new preservation strategy could use a risk management methodology. The approach begins with characterizing the nature of preservation risks in the Web environment, develops a methodology for establishing a preservation monitoring and evaluation program, and leads to the creation of management tools and policies.
