This presentation discusses the Proof of Concept Taxonomy project under the Gateways and Clusters Content Management Solution initiative. The project is presented in the context of the Government of Canada metadata strategy, providing the broad objectives of the project and the benefits of having a common multi-cluster taxonomy.

Function-based Records Classification
To support Canadian federal government institutions intending to arrange their records by function, Library and Archives Canada has developed a design methodology for constructing function-based records classification systems. This methodology is called Business Activity Structure Classification System (BASCS - pronounced as basis).

This standard adopts the principle of controlled vocabulary for the management of electronic information. The use of controlled vocabulary is necessary to classify and describe information and to support navigation, seraching, information sharing and interoperability goals of Government On-Line (GOL).

LAC maintains an authoritative Web page on terminology used in the federal government of Canada. The web page includes thesauri, classification schemes, controlled vocabularies, geographic names, subject clusters and taxonomies.
