Description
The Social Development Partnerships Program is a research and development
program that supports activities of the social non-profit sector. These
activities identify, develop and promote nationally significant best practices
and models of service delivery and build community capacity to meet the social
development needs and aspirations of populations that are vulnerable.
SDDP delivers at least three distinct components, including persons with
disabilities, early childhood learning and care, and social inclusion for other
vulnerable groups.
The program plays a unique role in furthering broad social goals by making
strategic investments, through grants and contributions, in generating and
disseminating knowledge, fostering partnerships to achieve shared goals and
strengthening the capacity of the social non-profit sector.
The SDPP funding activities are expected to lead to greater knowledge and
awareness of social issues and application of solutions and best practices,
greater collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to meet share
goals, and greater capacity within national social non-profit organizations to
promote social development and inclusion. Over the long term, the SDPP support
for these activities will help organizations in the non-profit sector to be more
effective in meeting the social needs and aspirations of their constituents and
will help government policy makers design and implement more responsive social
programs.
The SDPP advances Canada's commitment under the Social Union Framework Agreement
(SUFA) to promote the full and active participation of all Canadians in Canada's
social and economic life, and to work in partnership to ensure appropriate
opportunities for Canadians to have meaningful input into social policies and
programs.
It also recognizes the vital contribution that the social non-profit sector
makes to the wellbeing of Canadians by delivering services, enriching public
dialogue, providing feedback on program effectiveness, promoting citizen
engagement, and promoting understanding, awareness, inclusion and social
justice.
The SDPP's relationship with the social non-profit sector is guided by the
principles and values underlying the Accord Between the Government of Canada
and the Voluntary Sector.

Shared Outcome(s)
Recipients of grants and contributions are expected to report on the
achievement of results in relation to the program's objectives.
The long-term objective of SDPP is:
- Full inclusion of vulnerable populations (i.e. Persons with
disabilities, children and their families, and other vulnerable or
excluded populations) in all aspects of Canadian society.
Governance Structures
The Social Development Partnerships Program works through partnerships,
collaboration and sharing of knowledge with voluntary organizations, other
federal departments, international agencies, researchers, universities and other
not-for-profit organizations, as well as with provinces and territories. It
seeks to promote social inclusion and cohesion through cultural and
institutional change.
Funding is provided by Social Development Canada in the form of grants for
organizational support to national social voluntary organizations and
contributions to non-government organizations for research and development
projects with a pan-Canadian focus. Project proposals are assessed, primarily,
through review processes that include internal and external mechanisms.
Social Development Canada is the primary funding source of the program.
