The Web Services Sub-Group of the GOL Metadata Working Group was created on
March 24th 2004.
Membership
It is chaired by Luc Leblanc from PWGSC and Tom Kralidis (representing Ron
Gauthier) from Environment Canada, and reports to the GOL Metadata Working Group.
Membership consists of practitioners interested in identifying and
developing the potential of Web Services standards and practices in support of
metadata management and services in the GoC including representation from central
agencies, enterprise project teams like the CMS Team, RDIMS and GOL Gateways and
Clusters initiative.
Scope
The scope of the Web Services Sub Working Group will be two fold;
Identify and recommend the components and standards necessary to create and
manage enterprise Web Services required to support metadata management and
implementation,
Recommend and pilot specific Web Services to demonstrate that the standards and
components will support the management of metadata creation and interoperability
for functions such as content and records management, information search and
retrieval, access to and sharing of metadata syntax and semantics associated with
controlled vocabularies, taxonomies and other metadata values.
Objectives
- Lead the creation of a framework
for the management of web services in support of metadata management and
application.
- Identify the standards and
components necessary to support the framework.
- Facilitate the implementation of
the Dublin Core and other metadata standards by recommending a suite of web
services and components
- Promote awareness and
understanding of web services in support of metadata management to the larger GoC
IM and business communities
- Develop a community of
interest/practice to promote and advise on the development of information
management web services generally
Meetings
Tri-weekly: Core Working Group members
Quarterly: Reporting back to the Metadata Working Group
Deliverables
- Identify a suite of standards,
components and processes that constitute as Framework to manage Web Services
within the GOC for metadata management
- Promote the adoption of common
standards, operating principles, guidelines, and approaches to web services
development
- Provide a technical communication
channel between practitioners
- Report on working group progress
to the Metadata Working Group Committee
- Coordinate developments with other
Metadata WG sub-groups as necessary.
- Recommend demonstration web
services development projects and funding sources
- Review and comment on emerging
technologies and products as they relate to Web Services
- Identify and pursue potential
partnerships and strategic alliances related to the web services.

- Survey current Government of
Canada Web Services
(Secure Channel, e-contact, PWGSC CMS including synchronization and 143 GOL Web
Services by 2005) to identify points of leverage in work already done.
Description (Metadata)
- Survey and review of current and
emerging standards for describing Web Services
- Develop a Web Services semantics
and syntax for metadata management
Surveys and Reviews
- Review and identify web services
support required from ebXML and other registry/repository standards
- Identify integration and
interoperability dependencies and issues associated with emerging standards such
as the ebXML Business Process Schema Specification, WSDL, BPML, BPEL4WS, UBL, and
emerging XML business frameworks.
- Review and recommend web services
approach to GOC search, content and records management functions
- Survey and review related grammars
and standards (Semantic Web, XRI)
