Influence of
Metatags on Web-based Search Retrieval, Ranking and Relevancy, The
Dave Thompson, Director, Canada On-line Services
This paper, written as a partial requirement of an Executive Master of Electronic
Commerce at the University of Dalhousie, will identify the value that metatags and
metadata will provide in enhancing the search capability of Government On-line users. The
study will identify the issues in crawling, indexing, ranking and retrieving web content
through an Internet-based search engine. A discussion of the characteristics and benefits
of metatags and metadata along with their implementation within an overall information
and content management strategy will be reviewed. Results of the comparison between two
identical document sets, with the exception of embedded metatags, will be presented along
with conclusions on the value that metatags will contribute in addressing the issue of
providing relevant information to Government On-line users.
