The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat is developing the Government of
Canada's Framework for
the Management of Information in collaboration with Library and Archives
Canada, Public Works and Government Services Canada, and other federal
institutions.
What is the FMI?
The FMI provides strategic direction and a single source of authoritative
guidance for the management of information in the Government of Canada. The FMI
identifies obligations and accountabilities in accordance with specific laws,
regulations and policies; providescomprehensive practical guidance for specific
audiences: business managers, employees in general, and information management
professionals; describes how to measure how well information is managed in
institutions; and provides a basis for identifying organizational roles and
responsibilities for the management of information.
The FMI continues to evolve to reflect legislative and environmental changes,
including the needs of Canadians, technology, and culture in the workplace.
Why is the FMI needed?
Information and its management is an integral part of all government business
activities. The FMI provides direction and guidance on what good
management of information is, how to achieve it and how to monitor its
implementation.
The FMI plays an essential role in the renewal and modernization of the
management of information in the Government of Canada that is required in order
to deal with critical need identified by the Information Commissioner, the
Auditor General, and others to improve IM in the federal government.
Who should use the FMI?
The FMI is intended for all persons working for GoC in the fulfilment of
day-to-day activities. This includes senior managers, business managers, IM
professionals, and employees in general.
When to use the FMI?
Use the FMI for guidance on obligations and responsibilities in managing
information in day-to-day activities; in the design/redesign and delivery of
programs, services and projects; as a reference to monitor, assess, and audit
management of information responsibilities; for guidance on specific information
management topics; and in the preparation of training programs and awareness
campaigns for federal employees.
