Exploring Human Values and Official Languages - Session Leader's Compendium

This compendium provides background on and material for a workshop entitled Exploring Human Values and Official Languages. This workshop has been well received and beneficial to public servants in regions designated as bilingual for language-of-work purposes and to those who serve the public in English and in French. Participants belonging to both categories can profit even more, as the insights gained are applicable to both contexts.

A suitable context for this experiential and values exploration would be a half-day retreat. To set the right tone and fix the objective even before the session begins, the invitation should highlight that it as a genuine exploration of key human values, notably interpersonal respect, human dignity and solidarity, and their role in the use of English and French. Respect: A Whole-person Approach to Individual and Organizational Development

In 2002, the Public Service Human Resources Management Agency conducted a pilot project with a two-fold objective: to give French its rightful place in communications in certain bilingual regions by fostering a more respectful work environment. This paper summarizes the whole-person approach used, as well as how it applies to personal and organizational development; it also provides a results-oriented evaluation based on in-depth participant feedback. The success of the pilot project led to the creation of the half-day workshop and leader’s guide entitled Exploring Human Values and Official Languages - Session Leader’s Compendium. To access the Compendium, click here.
