The Information Management Strategies Division (IMSD) was established in September 2000 to focus Treasury Board Secretariat's efforts for improving and enhancing management of information in the Government of Canada.

IMSD is currently leading the following activities:

1. Framework for the Management of Information

IMSD is developing the Framework for the Management of Information (FMI) in collaboration with with Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC), Library and Archives of Canada (LAC) and departments and agencies.  The FMI provides current, authoritative and practical guidance for the management of information in the Government of Canada, supporting government departments and agencies in achieving service delivery, legal and policy obligations, citizen access, and accountability.  For more information see http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/fmi-cgi/index_e.asp.

2. Management of Government Information (MGI) Policy - Implementation and Compliance Support

The MGI Policy - Implementation and Compliance Support service is responsible for:

  • Identifying the major activities and related directives, procedures, tools, processes and organizational and technological requirements to support implementation of the MGI Policy and ongoing good management of information practice across government;
  • Determining a phased and costed implementation strategy; and,
  • Facilitating ongoing performance measurement by providing a checklist against requirements of the policy for use by government institutions, and by defining the IM requirements of an audit tool for monitoring and evaluation purposes.

3. Metadata Standards and Guidance for Information Interoperability and Access

IMSD leads development of GoC metadata standards and related infrastructure to ensure these are aligned with business needs and that they support interoperability, access and information management needs of federal programs. IMSD also provides support and guidance to assist GoC institutions to develop and implement their metadata initiatives. Through these activities, IMSD is promoting the use of metadata as a key enabler to achieve accountability, transparency and trust in the GoC's ability to manage information and deliver services to Canadians. For more information, please visit  http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/im-gi/meta/meta_e.asp

4. Government of Canada Information Management Program Strategic Business Design

The Treasury Board of Canada, Secretariat (TBS) is formally designing a Government of Canada (GoC) Information Management Program in collaboration with LAC and PWGSC, the information management community, and federal departments and agencies. Under an IM vision aligned with government priorities, TBS, PWGSC and LAC will align their complementary roles to allow departments and agencies to deliver programs and services under an enterprise-wide approach that is supported by excellent information management. The program will support Management of Government Information Policy and draw upon the Framework for the Management of Information as the main source of standards and guidance.

5. Information Management Portal and IM Outreach

The Information Management (IM) Portal is a single access point for resources that support information management in the Government of Canada.  The Portal describes, organizes and links to content in such subject areas as legislation, policies and guidelines, content management, records management, access to information, classification, metadata, archiving, publishing, services to government, tools, technology, and work descriptions.  The IM Portal also leads users to such IM community-specific activities as organizations, training, development, awards, e-learning, and discussion groups.  While Government of Canada information management specialists and program managers are the primary audiences for the IM Portal, it also provides access to Government of Canada IM-related information for Canadians and international audiences.  For more information visit the IM Portal at: www.informationmanagement.gc.ca.

6.  Information Management Day

IM Day is an annual event organized by the IMSD and open to employees of the Government of Canada. The event addresses key components of effective information management through a variety of keynote presentations, panel discussions, case studies and workshops.
