Nearly two dozen Nunavut students from Nunavut Sivuniksavut strengthened Inuit cultural connections and built lasting friendships with Alaskans during the group's tour of Alaska between April 27 and May 9, 2005. Nunavut Sivuniksavut is the eight-month college program in Ottawa that brings together university-age Inuit youth from Nunavut who are pursuing career opportunities enabled by the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (NLCA) and the new Government of Nunavut. Each year, the students organize a cultural tour; in 2005 they chose Alaska. The Consulate met with the students during their Anchorage visit to provide an overview of the strong Canada-U.S. relationship in Alaska. Highlights of the group's trip include a visit to Barrow, meetings with Alaskan Native business and political leaders, and the group's cultural performances at Elmendorf Air Force Base and the Alaska Native Cultural Center in Anchorage. |
