ACSUS Colloquium, “Canada in the North Pacific”

ACSUS’ 35th anniversary colloquium, “Canada in the North Pacific,” will examine Canada’s role and relationships in the North Pacific region and provide an intimate forum for Canadianists to compare research and perspectives on an area of increasingly vital significance in the 21st century. ACSUS-in-Alaska will involve two full days of panels and presentations and a full day of organized tours for colloquium participants in south central Alaska.

Listed speakers include the Hon. Larry Bagnell, MP for the Yukon; Paul Evans, Co-CEO, Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada; and Wenran Jiang, Director, China Institute, University of Alberta; among other distinguished presenters.

ACSUS Colloquium/Alaska World Affairs Council Luncheon

Bob Paquin, Senior Asia Policy Advisor for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, will provide a noontime lecture titled “Canada’s Relations with Northeast Asia.” His presentation is being organized by ACSUS, the Alaska World Affairs Council, and the Consulate of Canada in Anchorage.

OCTOBER

Michael Adams, Canadian Author/Social Commentator
Location: UAA Consortium Library, Room 307, Anchorage

Free and open to the public

Michael Adams, author of “American Backlash: The Untold Story of Social Change in the United States” and “Fire and Ice,” will discuss the direction of American society and democracy in light of the increasing lack of political participation by U.S. citizens.

Winner of the Donner Prize, Adams also is a founder of Environics, a company that tracks social trends and their effect on current business and public policy making. Adams’ visit is made possible with assistance from numerous supporters, including the Elizabeth Tower Endowment for Canadian Studies, the Consulate of Canada in Anchorage, the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) Canadian Studies Program, the UAA Campus Bookstore, and the UAA International Studies program.

Canadian Thanksgiving

World-renowned Dynamo Théâtre of Canada takes a look at rejection and bullying in this acclaimed show that incorporates acrobatic movement, mime and fun. “Me me me” opens with four students who arrive at class full of energy, literally climbing the walls and engaging in acrobatics. Before long, the light-heartened scene turns serious as one girl becomes rejected and turned into an outcast by her friends. Eventually the students realize the hurtfulness of their actions.

NOVEMBER

Remembrance Day/Veterans Day
Date: November 11, 2006
Time: 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Location: National Guard Armory at Fort Richardson & the Fort Richardson National Cemetery Open to the Public

Canadian and U.S. military personnel will honor veterans and the service men and women who gave their lives to defend their nations during Remembrance Day/Veterans Day ceremonies, being held at Fort Richardson. Other planned speakers include officials from the State of Alaska.

Following the ceremony at the National Guard Armory, the Canadian Contingent at Elmendorf Air Force Base will host an outdoor ceremony at the Fort Richardson National Ceremony that includes the reading of In Flanders Fields, the laying of wreaths, and the playing of Reveille and Last Post.

Remembrance Day/Veterans Day is celebrated each year to mark the anniversary of the Nov. 11, 1918 Armistice that ended World War I, a conflict that took 10 million lives. All told, more than 619,000 Canadian men and women fought in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. More than 66,000 lost their lives, as did several thousands of others in the navy, merchant navy, in the Newfoundland Forces and the Canadian Royal Flying Corps. Almost one Canadian in 10 who took part in the war did not see his country again.
