A security that does not pay interest on a periodic basis, but is initially sold at a discount from its face value and redeemed for the full amount at maturity. NOTE: The difference between the cost of the bond and its value when redeemed is the investor's return (if the bond is held to maturity). A type of zero-coupon bond known as a strip bond is available from Canadian investment dealers. The term "zero-coupon bond" is sometimes used synonymously with "strip bond," especially in the United States. |
