Program Description

The Canada Council for the Arts provides assistance to foreign publishers for the translation of literary works by Canadian authors, into languages other than French or English, for publication abroad.

Writers may apply for a Travel Grant to attend the launch of their book by a foreign publisher. A Canadian translator may also apply for a grant to attend the launch of a book abroad if he or she has translated the book and will be accompanied by the author. For further details or to obtain an application form, contact Marcel Hull, Writing and Publishing Section Officer, toll free at 1-800-263-5588 or (613) 566-4414, ext. 4571.

Eligibility

Professional foreign publishers may apply for assistance toward the translation of Canadian-authored literary works that have been professionally published.

Eligible categories are poetry, fiction, drama, children's literature (excluding manuals) and literary non-fiction targeted to the general public. (For information about theatre production, contact the Theatre Section, toll-free at 1-800-263-5588 or (613) 566-4414, ext. 4487.)

Applications must be submitted before the translation has been completed.

A searchable list of translation projects funded through the Writing and Publishing Section’s Book Publishing Support: Translation Grants is posted on the Council’s website.

Applicants must be established houses with an active backlist of at least four literary titles. Book publishing must be their primary activity, not a peripheral or occasional activity.

Priority will be given to books that have been short-listed for or have won literary awards (for example, Governor General's Literary Awards and Canada-Japan Literary Awards).

Grant Amount

The amount of the grant is based on the standard translation rate in effect in the foreign publisher's country. If the translator resides outside the publisher's country, the amount of the grant is based on the standard rate in effect in the translator's country of residence.

Grants cover 50 percent of the translation costs. The foreign publisher covers the balance. Grants do not include editing, printing or distribution costs.

Assessment of Applications

Applications are reviewed by the Writing and Publishing Section. Funding decisions are based on the availability of funds and the overall literary merit of the project in comparison with other eligible applications.

Publishers are generally notified of the results approximately four months after the receipt of their completed applications. Results are not released over the telephone.
