AECL Reports Incident At Chalk River Facilities

Chalk River, 2006 May 04 — At approximately 13:30 hours, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) reported an emergency incident at its Chalk River Laboratories when a fire was reported in a lab facility. AECL's emergency and fire personnel responded and were able to contain the fire immediately.

One employee suffered a minor injury and was treated at the site and three firefighters received minor smoke inhalation. As part of AECL's emergency procedures, all employees were advised to stay indoors as a precautionary measure. The all-clear notice was given to employees at approximately 15:15 hours.

There were no airborne releases and no off-site consequences are expected. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has been notified and Emergency Management Ontario has been notified. An investigation by AECL into the cause of the incident is underway.
