AECL Presents Earth Day Gift

Mississauga, April 22, 2004 — In celebration of Earth Day Atomic Energy of Canada Limited presented a tree to its new neighbours at Cedar Grove School on Speakman Drive.

Students and staff joined Dr. Paul Fehrenbach, AECL Vice President of Nuclear Laboratories with the official planting of a maple tree in front of Cedar Grove School today.

“Earth Day is a great way to promote education and restore and protect our community’s environment,” said Dr. Fehrenbach. “Earth Day activities teach people how small actions can add up to a big difference in their communities.”

This year marks the 34th anniversary of Earth Day, the largest environmental event in the world. Today’s efforts reflect on the commitment of students, staff and AECL employees to protect the environment.

“Earth Day gives children an early start to becoming environmentally active members of their community,” said Susan Kendall, Director of Cedar Grove School.

Nuclear energy does not produce gases that contribute to global warming, cause acid rain or produce smog related pollutants to the atmosphere. Over the last thirty years CANDU reactors in Canada have avoided more than one billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited is the authority for CANDU nuclear reactors providing emissions-free electricity to the world and is completing the development of an innovative next generation system – the Advanced CANDU Reactor (ACR).
