Biographical note

Mark L. Jewett

Mark Jewett was appointed General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of the Bank of Canada in June 2001. In this capacity, he is responsible for ensuring a full range of support to the Board of Directors and senior management, and is the principal liaison between them. Mr. Jewett is responsible for all legal matters and provides expertise and direction in corporate governance practices. He is also a member of the Financial System Committee.

Born in Montréal, Mr. Jewett is a graduate of the University of New Brunswick with degrees in Arts and Law, and a graduate of Cambridge University with degrees in International Law. He is a member of the New Brunswick Bar and was named Queen's Counsel in 1982.

Before joining the Bank of Canada, Mr. Jewett had served as Senior Assistant Deputy Minister at the Department of Justice and the Department of Finance. He has also held a number of other senior positions with the departments of Justice and Finance, the European Commission in Brussels, and the law firm of Debevoise and Plimpton in New York.
