Help - MSDS Field Searching

Each database/collection has an Advanced Search page which allows you to search in the specific fields for that database/collection. Using the Advanced Search page, you can:

  • build your search step-by-step using the boxes at the top of the Advanced Search page,
    or
  • type your query statement, including all appropriate syntax, in the Query box.

To search in a specific field, click on the drop down button next to All Fields and select the desired field, e.g. CASRegistryNumber. The most frequently searched fields are listed first. To find out the appropriate names of all fields, turn on the Field Help from the toolbar and click on the ? help symbol next to the field in any database record. You can now view the field name and its description.

Use the information below as a guide to executing detailed searches using the MSDS Advanced Search page:

MSDS - Major Search Fields

These are the frequently searched fields listed in the drop down list on the Advanced Search page.

Searching using: Finds information in:
  AllFields  All fields except Material Safety Data 
 ProductName   Product name
 CompanyName  name of the manufacturer, distributor, or supplier 
 ProductID   All product identification fields other than product name, such as CAS Registry Number or product codes
  MaterialSafetyData  the entire data sheet 
 DateOfMSDS  Date MSDS was issued, revised, or confirmed to be current.
 Type  text, pdf, URL
 RecordNumber  RecordNumber in the MSDS database 
Note: All fields have been indexed. Each field has a specific name which must be used for searching as outlined above.

Tip:   For a complete list of database fields, while viewing a database record, turn on the Field Help from the toolbar and click on the ? help symbol next to the field in any database record. You can now view the field name and its description, from the complete list of fields for the database. You can easily print this list, by clicking in the field help window, right-clicking and then selecting Print.

MSDS - Search Examples

Tip: For searches from the Advanced Search page, multiple words are automatically treated as a phrase and find all forms of the words as a phrase.

 Search Examples Finds all records
 * <IN> CompanyName  with a Company Name field
 shell <IN> CompanyName  with this company in the Company Name field
 2003* <IN> DateOfMSDS  dated 2003 or confirmed current in 2003
 WD40 <OR> WD-40  with either spelling of the name, in All Fields by defualt
 WD* <IN> ProductName  with WD in the Product Name
 unleaded gasoline <IN> ProductName  with all forms of the words unleaded and gasoline in the Product Name
 "unleaded gasoline" <IN> ProductName  with the exact phrase unleaded gasoline in the Product Name
 7664-93-9 
 7664-93-9 <IN> ProductID
 both searches find sulfuric acid as a product
 7664-93-9 <IN> MaterialSafetyData  sulfuric acid as a product or sulfuric acid as an ingredient (CAS Registry Numbers appear anywhere in the MSDS)

MSDS Search Tips:
  • A search using either shell or SHELL will find both Shell and SHELL.
  • For product names, be sure your spelling is accurate. If in doubt, use the wildcard features:
    • a search for ?lean will find clean and klean
    • a search for gas* will find gas and gasoline.
