What boat appears on the back of the 1969 $1 bill?

In 1969, the Bank of Canada decided to issue a new series of bank notes designed to make counterfeiting more difficult. This series is known as the "multicoloured series" because of the many colours used in the designs.

The back of each denomination shows Canadian scenes, much like the 1954 series, but this time, human activity was depicted. The $1 note features Parliament Hill as seen from the Quebec shore. The boat on the Ottawa River is the Missinaibi, which means "traces left by the water." This boat was a tug that hauled log rafts. The photo was taken in 1963 by Ottawa photographer Malak Karsh.

As a result of the 1969 series, the Missinaibi became very famous and is on display today at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. To learn more about it, you can visit the Museum’s Web site at: http://www.civilization.ca.
