  Using the Internet to Access Health and Safety Resources
 

This basic one day hands-on course is designed for people with little or no Internet experience. Learn how to exchange ideas and information with your peers through health and safety discussion groups. Access global health and safety information available on the World Wide Web. Find out how to get connected.

This practical course provides you with ample opportunity to try out Internet-based software, search tools and resources.

Experience with computers running Windows or the Macintosh operating system is recommended.

The American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) awards 1.0 CM points for the course. The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) awards 0.5 COC points. The Association for Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (ACRSP) awards 1 MM point. The Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists (CRBOH) awards 1.0 maintenance points.

An advanced course for experienced Internet users is also offered.

Course Outline

MORNING (9 AM - 12 Noon)

Introduction

  • Introduction to the Internet
  • Discussion of its history, size, growth and types of resources

E-Mail and Mailing Lists

  • Discussion highlighting concepts and buzz-terms
  • Workshop using both E-mail and public mailing lists (e-mail-based discussion groups)

Usenet Newsgroups

  • Brief lecture/demonstration showing newsgroups, their hierarchies, useful news reader software and health and safety newsgroup resources

Telnet, FTP and Gopher

  • Brief discussion/hands-on exploration of these three technologies for connecting to, and transferring information from, other computers on the Internet. The focus will be on their application to health and safety.

AFTERNOON (1 PM - 4:30 PM)

World Wide Web

  • Introduction to World Wide Web (WWW) technology
  • Discussion/hands-on exploration of key health and safety WWW sites
  • Discussion/hands-on exploration of WWW directories and search engines
  • Hands-on workshop

Research Session

  • Research health & safety topics using tools learned throughout the day

How To Get Connected

  • Discussion about finding Internet service providers and hardware/software requirements for access

Wrap-up

  • Question and answer period
  • Course evaluation
