2006 National Summer Institute (NSI) on Addictions a great success!

July 10 to 13, 2006, Stanhope, Prince Edward Island (PEI)

Highlights

The fourth and largest National Summer Institute (NSI) on Addictions sold out, drawing just under 100 participants from across Canada to Stanhope Beach Resort, PEI. This beautiful location set the stage for this year's theme, Working Together: Partnerships Along the Continuum of Service, providing a unique and supportive environment for sharing information, ideas and best practices across disciplines.

The Institute's agenda kicked off the four-day event with an engaging presentation on the Community Reinforcement Approach and Family Training (CRAFT) by keynote speaker Dr. Robert Meyers, a distinguished research associate Professor of Psychology at the University of New Mexico's Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addiction (UNM) and the Associate Director of the Life Link Training Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This year's Institute also featured presentations and workshops by leading clinicians, researchers and policy/program specialists, including:

  • Wayne Skinner, Deputy Clinical Director at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
  • Dr. Nicholas Kates, Director of the Shared Care program at McMaster University
  • Nancy Poole, British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women's Health

Additional opportunities for participant interaction were provided in the form of a lecture series and small group workshops. The event wrapped up with a facilitated group discussion of "Lessons Learned" at the National Summer Institute and the development of a Recipe Card identifying key factors (ingredients) needed to develop effective partnerships.

Event organizers from the Addictions Research Centre (ARC) of the Correctional Service Canada and the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) continue to work together to develop the 2006 NSI Summary Report (available soon), and compile faculty presentations for sharing online.
