Territorial Resource

This web page provides access to credible information on substance abuse and addictions research, reports, and resources relevant to Canada's northern territories. It concentrates on no-cost, accessible information. The web page also provides a virtual forum for communication among individuals working in the substance abuse and addictions fields.

In the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon, the impacts of substance abuse and addiction are far-reaching. High rates of unemployment, isolation and for many First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, the inter-generational impacts of colonization, residential schools, land claims and abuses have contributed to substance abuse and addictions problems. Some communities have already developed effective responses. There is a common need across Canada's three territories for the development of holistic, community-based, and culturally inclusive approaches to the identification, prevention and treatment of substance abuse and addictions. Sharing information on related research and activities relevant to Canada's northern territories is one step toward addressing this need.
