- Canadian Forces Mail Service

Canadian Forces Mail is mail sent to or by Canadian Forces personnel, their dependents and the civilians attached to the Canadian Forces served through the Canadian Forces Post Office (CFPO) or the Fleet Mail Office (FMO).

The rate charged for domestic mail is applicable for mail sent to Canadian Forces personnel providing it is sent through a CFPO or an FMO.

All parcels must include an International Customs Declaration form (CP72) and are subject to customs inspection in the country of destination. Oversize parcels and parcels over 20 kg are not acceptable.

Example 1:

A mailer in Saskatoon wants to send a package to her brother stationed with the Canadian Air Force in Turkey. The package must be prepared as it would for any other package, addressed to it to her brother including the rank, unit and mess number. It would then be sent to the only CFPO in Canada, located in Belleville, Ontario (K0K 3R0). The mailer would then have to decide whether to send the package using Regular Parcel, Xpresspost or Priority Courier, and also select from all the domestic add-ons that are available.

The price paid is not the cost of mailing to Turkey but rather the cost of mailing to Belleville.

The CFPO would then sort the package and send it to their base in Turkey generally using their own mode of transportation.

NOTE: The delivery standards are guaranteed up to the domestic delivery point (e.g. Belleville). The CFPO determines how and when the letter or package will be sent.

Example 2:

A mailer wants to send a parcel to a friend in the Canadian Navy stationed on a ship in the Persian Gulf. The parcel must be properly addressed including name, rank and number, unit, mess number, and the name of the ship. The customer would have the option of mailing it to a FMO in Victoria, British Columbia (V0S 1B0) or to Halifax, Nova Scotia (B3K 2X0). The mailer would select the parcel service that he or she prefers and additional add-ons that are available for the service chosen.

The FMO in Halifax or Victoria would re-sort the parcel and ship it using their own transportation mode to the addressee.

Example 3:

A mailer wishes to send a 20 g letter to a Canadian Forces Base in Germany. The letter is addressed directly to the base. The customer must pay international letter rates to mail the letter. If the mailer chooses to send it through a CFPO, the mailer must pay only the domestic rate. The CFPO would organize the delivery of the letter to Germany.

Example 4:

A member of the Canadian Armed Forces stationed in Cyprus wants to mail a parcel to a friend in Ottawa. He/she would address the parcel with the full name, address and postal code and drop the parcel off at the CFPO in Cyprus. The postal rate would be based on the domestic rate from Belleville, Ontario to Ottawa. All the add-ons applicable to the service selected can be purchased at the domestic rate.

NOTE: If the same parcel was mailed from an FMO, the rate charged would be from either Halifax or Victoria.
