Over the past two years, the Commission has initiated an internal process of change focussed on improvements in the areas of case management, program delivery and internal corporate management. In its 2003 Annual Report, the Commission called for legislative and regulatory changes that would set the foundation for human rights in Canada for the next 25 years. Other possible reforms and plans for continuous improvement were also outlined in the Annual Report. The Commission is committed to discuss possible future directions in the human right discipline with stakeholders. The consultations undertaken this Fall will be serving two purposes. The first one is to obtain the views of stakeholders on the five guiding principles that the Commission has established to focus action: a human rights system that serves the public interest; transforms behaviour; is comprehensive; is preventive and forward-looking; and is independent, impartial and ensures good governance. The second one is to begin an ongoing dialogue with stakeholders to guide the Commission’s policy work and activities as they are being developed and implemented. The purpose of the Commission’s reforms is ultimately to serve Canadians better. It is therefore important to receive feedback from our stakeholders and other Canadians on these five guiding principles and their impact. Our stakeholders’ observations will guide the Commission as it looks ahead to the future. The Looking Ahead - Consultation Document has been posted on our website and contains a set of key questions to facilitate input. Results of these consultations will be incorporated into our next Annual Report, scheduled to be tabled in early 2005.
