CWB expands diploma scholarship program to Alberta's Lakeland College

September 9, 2004

Winnipeg - The CWB today announced it has expanded its diploma scholarship program for students entering the Crop Technology or Agribusiness programs at the Vermilion, Alberta campus of Lakeland College. With this addition, the CWB now provides scholarships to students in diploma programs at four Prairie institutions: Lakeland College and Olds College in Alberta, the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Manitoba.

The CWB will provide four $1500 scholarships each year to students entering their first year at Lakeland College. Recipients will be selected based on their record of academic achievement during high school, school and community leadership, and their commitment to a career in the development of western Canada's agriculture industry.

"Assisting students to pursue an education in agriculture is an investment in the future of our industry,"said Ken Ritter, chair of the CWB's farmer-controlled board of directors. "The agriculture diploma programs at Lakeland College are well recognized across the Prairies and expanding our scholarship program to include this school is a logical step."

This announcement brings to 16 the total number of diploma agricultural students who will receive CWB scholarships this year. The CWB also awards 29 scholarships a year to students enrolled in Bachelor of Agricultural Science or Bachelor of Agribusiness programs at the universities of Lethbridge, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In total, 45 agricultural students will receive CWB scholarships this year; the recipients will be announced later this fall. The scholarships are funded from farmers' uncashed payment cheques.

Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada's biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less marketing costs, to Prairie farmers.
