CWB names master durum grower competition winners

Swift Current, Saskatchewan - Spring Creek Colony near Maple Creek, Saskatchewan has been named the CWB’s 2002 Master Durum Grower. The announcement was made yesterday at the Durum Challenge III meeting in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

A sample of AC Avonlea submitted by Spring Creek Colony was awarded first place in the competition, with F & M Haas Grain Farm Ltd., Hilda, Alberta placing second. The other finalists were: Lyle Knutson, Elbow, Saskatchewan; Will Lowe, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and Philip Hierath, Milk River, Saskatchewan.

“I commend the five finalists and all others who entered this year’s Master Durum Grower competition,” said Earl Geddes, CWB Vice-President, Farmer Relations. “In a year where farmers had to face all kinds of challenges, it takes a great deal of determination and hard work to produce durum of this quality.”

Approximately 75 samples were submitted to the CWB for judging. Samples were judged based on quality factors including test weight, protein content, vitreous kernel soundness and colour.

The first place winner will receive an expense-paid weekend for two in Toronto that will include a pasta plant tour and attendance at a sporting/cultural event. Co-sponsors of the first place prize package are Italpasta Ltd. and the Canadian Pasta Manufacturers Association. In addition, first and second place winners will be given the opportunity to participate in a Canadian International Grains Institute program.

Italpasta Ltd.’s Frank DeMichino, Vice-President, Sales in Brampton, Ontario gave a presentation on the Canadian pasta industry at the Durum Challenge III meeting, while Don Jarvis, Executive Director of the Canadian Pasta Manufacturers Association, spoke on selling Canadian pasta to buyers around the world. They also congratulated this year’s master growers.

“On behalf of Italpasta, and as a member of the Canadian Pasta Association, I would like to extend congratulations to the winners and applaud the hard work and diligence of all the participants,” said DeMichino.

Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada’s biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less marketing costs, to Prairie farmers.
