Interim Payment Approved for 2000-01 Pool Year

Winnipeg - The CWB today announced interim payments will be made on most grades of wheat (including durum) and barley delivered to the CWB during the 2000-01 crop year.

Interim payments represent partial settlement of the proceeds due to farmers from the sale of their grain. Interim payments are issued after July 31st and are an earlier payment of proceeds that would normally be included in the final payment.

The interim payments for wheat range from $5 to $17 per tonne. The interim payments for durum wheat are from $22 to $32 per tonne with the exception of the payment for No. 5 durum which is $5 per tonne. Feed barley growers will receive interim payments of $7 per tonne. The interim payments for designated barley will be $3 to $15 per tonne, with no payments for six-row hulless and two-row fusarium barley. The attached table shows the initial payment in effect at the end of the 2000-01 crop year, the interim payment and the total paid to date, basis in store Vancouver or St. Lawrence, for several base grades of wheat, durum and barley. A complete list is posted on the CWB Web site at www.cwb.ca. Payments rates for specific grades can also be obtained by calling the toll-free line at 1-800-275-4292. To estimate the remaining payments, compare the total paid to date with the CWB's September Pool Return Outlook (PRO) for the 2000-01 crop year which is posted on the Web site as well.

Interim payment cheques will be mailed to farmers by November 9, 2001. Direct deposit payments will be credited to most farmers' accounts by their financial institution on November 7, 2001.

Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada's biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less marketing costs, to Prairie farmers.
