The Cape Breton Growth Fund (CBGF) is responsible for the delivery of the economic adjustment fund established by the Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia in the wake of the federal government's decision to close the Cape Breton Development Corporation (Devco). The CBGF is comprised of a $86 million contribution from the Government of Canada, and a $12 million contribution from the Government of Nova Scotia.

Mandate

Through its Articles of Incorporation, the Cape Breton Growth Fund (CBGF) has a broad mandate for economic development:

The objects of the Corporation are to promote and assist, either alone or in conjunction with any person or the Government of Canada or of Nova Scotia or any agency of either of those governments, the financing and development of industry on Cape Breton Island to provide employment outside the coal producing industry and to broaden the base of the economy of Cape Breton Island.

Mission

The mission statement of the Corporation is intended to focus the organization on the major issues affecting the economy of Cape Breton Island, it reflects the three key considerations for the Fund: complementary to existing programming, leverage through partnerships and long-term, sustainable economic growth. The mission statement is provided as follows:

"The Cape Breton Growth Fund Corporation in partnership with other public sectors, the private sector and other community stakeholders will make investments that complement existing programs to foster sustainable economic growth and job creation on Cape Breton Island."
