APPOINTMENT TO ENTERPRISE CAPE BRETON CORPORATION (ECBC) BOARD OF DIRECTORS

OTTAWA - May 23, 2000 - Senator Bernie Boudreau, Leader of the Government in the Senate and Minister responsible for Nova Scotia announces the appointments of Ms. Ferne Virginia MacLennan of River Denys, N.S., and Mr. Spyro Trifos of Sydney, N.S., to the Board of Directors of Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC).

A native of River Denys, Inverness County, Ms. MacLennan is currently a member of the Faculty of the Business Information Technology Department at the Nova Scotia Community College— Strait Campus. She has experience as an entrepreneur and in the area of community- based economic development having worked as Executive Director, Sydney and Area Community Futures; Business Analyst, Incor Business Development Centre, Mabou; having chaired the Women’s Business Network and, presently, the Denysdale Wood Producers Co-op. She has also served on the ACT! For a Healthy Sydney Committee and the CED Policy Advisory Committee.

A native of Sydney, Cape Breton County, Mr. Trifos is the principal architect with Trifos Design Consultants of Sydney which he established in 1986. Prior to that he was with Arcop Associates of Montreal and subsequently as an independent contract/design consultant for various retail, commercial and professional clients under the company title of Triarch Design Consultants. He is actively involved in his community as one of the Founders and a Director of Silicon Island Art & Innovation Centre; Chairman, Cape Breton Regional Municipality Heritage Advisory Committee; Treasurer, Coastal Business Opportunities Inc. Ltd; Secretary, Rotary Club of Sydney; and Past Commodore, Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club.

“Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation has an important role to play in the economic diversification of Cape Breton Island through the creation of jobs, the establishment of private sector partnerships, and the marketing of Cape Breton as an area of opportunity,” said Senator Boudreau. “A strong, local board provides the necessary leadership to achieve these goals. Ms. MacLennan and Mr. Trifos are community-minded individuals with strong professional credentials,experience in community economic development and as entrepreneurs, in rural and non-rural Cape Breton Island. I am pleased that they have agreed to serve the Island through their involvement with ECBC.”

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation is a federal Crown corporation with a mandate to encourage and develop economic growth on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area. It also is responsible for the delivery of the ACOA programs in these areas.
