INDUSTRY EXPANSION COMPLEMENTED BY INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT IN MULGRAVE

MULGRAVE, N.S. -- Ocean Nutrition, a marine-based health and nutritional products business, has just completed an expansion of its manufacturing facility in Mulgrave and has commenced construction of a second facility due to be completed by year end-2000.

This expansion, in the Mulgrave Marine Industrial Park, is being complemented by the construction of a new sewage treatment plant by the Town of Mulgrave and is partially funded by the Government of Canada. The total estimated cost of the project is $603,600. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation will make a non-repayable contribution of $298,200. Funding will also come from the Nova Scotia Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs and the Town of Mulgrave.

The plant will have a 72,000 US gallon per day capacity which represents a 120 per cent increase in the town's sewage treatment capacity. The larger capacity will also improve service to existing industries. The plant is under construction near McNair Point on Loggie Street.

"This project will enable the Town of Mulgrave to better accommodate the Ocean Nutrition expansion which will in turn bring many benefits to the community. It puts in place an important piece of industrial infrastructure and the Government of Canada is pleased to be a partner," said the Honourable Bernie Boudreau, Leader of the Government in the Senate and Minister responsible for Nova Scotia, who announced the Government of Canada funding on behalf of the Honourable George Baker, Secretary of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation.

"The Town is pleased, with the Government of Canada's assistance, to be improving the service we can offer this company. Ocean Nutrition is a good corporate citizen and this major expansion of their facilities represents a commitment to the Town and the people of Mulgrave. We appreciate the Government of Canada's support for our efforts to accommodate the company's growth," said Mulgrave Mayor Leonard MacDonald.

Construction of the new sewage treatment plant began in March of 2000 and is expected to be completed by mid-summer or early fall. This phase of the project will create between 10 and 20 jobs and one full time job will be created for a plant operator.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA's programs in Cape Breton and the Mulgrave area.
