FCC 4-H Scholarship Program

The FCC/4-H Scholarship Program encourages 4-H members to submit project plans that improve safety, reduce hunger or enhance their communities.

Congratulations to this year’s winners!

National Winner:
Janet Maxner, Windsor, N.S. – Farm Safety Road Signs
Janet realized that many commuters from bigger cities use the rural roads in her community and don’t understand the dangers involved when passing through agriculture areas. Her project will produce road signs to warn commuters of slow-moving vehicles like tractors, and to pass them with caution.
Provincial Winners:
Kelli Burdek, Lac La Biche, AB – Boating and Water Safety Workshop
Kelli’s project proposed the idea of reducing the number of water-related injuries and deaths in the Lakeland County area of Alberta by offering a mobile water and boating safety workshop during the summer months.
Stephanie Broeder, Assiniboia, SK – Seasonal School Bus Stop Shelter
Realizing that students who take the bus to school in the winter often have to endure “severe wind and blowing snow” while waiting for the bus, her idea was to build a seasonal bus shelter for those students to protect them from the elements.
Dave Van Buuren, Pipestone, MB – Outdoor Hockey Rink
Dave saw a need to build an outdoor hockey rink in his community for ice and in-line hockey. He proposed that this rink would provide a safer area for kids who play hockey on the streets.
Robyn Thompson, Kincardine, ON – Farm Vehicle Safety Lights
Recognizing that farm vehicle accidents are five times more likely to lead to a fatal outcome, Robyn proposed giving away battery-powered flashing lights for farm vehicles to make them more visible to all drivers.
Marie-Eve Lehoux, Saint-Elzéar, QC - First Aid Training
Though there is a lot of awareness and information available through the local school on first aid in the workplace, there is such a demand that people have to be turned away. Marie-Eve hopes to address this need by working with the Red Cross to hold a first aid course specific to agriculture.
Lisa van de Brand, Salisbury West, N.B. – Promoting Safe Interactions between Children and Dogs
Lisa’s idea was to educate Kindergarten students in her community about dog safety through a Bite Prevention Program organized by the N.B. SPCA.
Ashley Gaudet, Cornwall, P.E.I. – Off Road Vehicle Safety for Kids
Ashley is concerned with the safety risks involved for young children and teenagers when riding an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and wants to ensure that everyone is well enough informed to ride safely. Her idea is to conduct a safety and awareness session within her community on the use of ATV’s.

A partnership: Farm Credit Canada and 4-H
FCC is passionate about helping the communities where our customers live and work. About 80 per cent of employees come from a farming background. Many of us experienced the value of 4-H membership first-hand and so we are proud of our partnership.

The partnership continues
This is the 12th and final year of the FCC/4-H Scholarship Program. Later this month, FCC will announce new plans to support 4-H in recruiting new members.
