July 15, 1991
The Indian Specific Claims Commission is established (Order in Council P.C. 1991-1329). Harry S. LaForme is appointed Chief Commissioner.

July 27, 1992
The Commission's mandate is revised to reflect Assembly of First Nations (AFN) concerns (Order in Council P.C. 1992-1730). Six additional Commissioners are appointed: Roger Augustine, Dan Bellegarde, Carole Corcoran, Carol Dutcheshen, Charles Hamelin, and P.E. James Prentice, QC.

July 1993
Commissioner Hamelin passes away.

August 1993
The Canoe Lake and Cold Lake inquiries are completed and the Commission releases its first reports. The Commission finds that the government has breached its treaty and fiduciary obligations to the First Nations in the creation of the Primrose Lake Weapons Range and recommends negotiation of a settlement.

February 1994
Chief Commissioner LaForme is appointed judge of the Ontario Court of Justice (General Division).

March 17 , 1994
Commissioners Bellegarde and Prentice are appointed interim Co-Chairs of the Commission (Order in Council P.C. 1994-0467).

May 1994
Commissioner Dutcheshen resigns to accept a position with Ontario Hydro.

The Commission releases its first Annual Report (1991/92 to 1993/94) after its first full year of operation, making six recommendations to government. These include: responding within 60 days to Commission reports and making better use of mediation to resolve claims.

June 1-2, 1994
The Commission and the AFN discuss land claims policy reform in Winnipeg.

November 29 , 1994
Aurélien Gill of Pointe Bleue, Quebec, is appointed Commissioner (Order in Council P.C. 1994-1961).

June 27-29, 1995
The Commission and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations meet with chiefs and other First Nation delegates to discuss land claims policy reform, including the feasibility of an independent claims body.

June 18-19, 1996
The Commission and First Nations of Quebec co-host First Nations in Quebec and Labrador Policy Forum on Land Claim Issues in Montreal, Quebec.

June 27, 1996
Commissioners advise the Prime Minister and the AFN National Chief that the Commission will stop work as of March 31, 1997 because of lack of government response to Commission recommendations.

March 27, 1997
Commissioners agree to continue the work of the Commission in view of the progress made since June 1996. They commit to continue operations until specific claims policy reform is complete.

September 17, 1998
Commissioner Gill is appointed to the Senate and resigns from the ICC.

January 8, 1999
Elijah Harper of Red Sucker Lake, Manitoba, is appointed Commissioner (Order in Council P.C. 1999-8).

May 4, 1999
Sheila G. Purdy of Ottawa, Ontario, is appointed Commissioner (Order in Council P.C. 1999-814).

October 6, 2000
Commissioner Harper resigns from the ICC in order to run in the 2000 federal election.

February 15, 2001
Commissioner Carole T. Corcoran passes away.

March 28, 2001
Renée Dupuis of Quebec City, Quebec and Alan C. Holman of Charlottetown, P.E.I. are appointed Commissioners (Order in Council P.C. 2001-474).

May 29, 2001
Co-Chairs Bellegarde and Prentice appear before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs to discuss the ICC's Annual Report 1999-2000. For the first time in the ICC's ten-year history the Commissioners declined to make new recommendations, choosing instead to "reiterate the recommendations we have offered since our inception."

July 15, 2001
The ICC marks its 10th anniversary.

August 29, 2001
Phil Fontaine of the Sagkeeng Anishinabe First Nation, Manitoba, is appointed Chief Commissioner (Order in Council P.C. 2001-1597). Mr. Bellegarde and Mr. Prentice resign as Co-Chairs and continue to serve as Commissioners.

December 3, 2001
Commissioner P. E. James Prentice, former Co-Chair, resigns in order to devote more time to his Calgary law practice.

October 29, 2002
Jane Dickson-Gilmore of Ottawa, Ontario, is appointed Commissioner (Order in Council P.C. 2002-1853).

June 3, 2003
Phil Fontaine resigns as Chief Commissioner.

June 10, 2003
Renée Dupuis of Québec City, Québec, is appointed Chief Commissioner (Order in Council P.C.2003-886)

September 18, 2003
Roger Augustine resigns as Commissioner.
