Grainworld conference recognizes Canadian agriculture is at a crossroads

Feb. 8, 2005

Winnipeg - How will Canada stay competitive in the face of low cost producers? How will WTO agreements affect the industry? Are current agriculture initiatives leading Canada in the right direction? The 14th annual GrainWorld conference will address these and other challenges while considering perspectives that enable the industry to face the future with confidence.

As Canada's premiere annual grains, oilseeds and livestock outlook conference, GrainWorld will be held at the Fairmont Hotel in Winnipeg from February 27 - March 1, 2005. Organizers expect several hundred agriculture professionals from a broad range of backgrounds will take part. There is still time to register at a reduced conference rate of $275 until February 11.

"To stay competitive as an industry, it is important to share a common vision," said GrainWorld chairman Peter Watts. "Our conference connects the grains, oilseeds and livestock industry with farmers, academics and policymakers."

Featured speakers at the conference will include the chief economist for the Conference Board of Canada, Glen Hodgson, who will discuss Canada's general competitiveness, while Canadian Auto Workers chief economist Jim Stanford will share his perspective as a national commentator on economic issues.

One of the conference's two panels will feature Canadian thinkers exploring the future competitiveness of agriculture in Canada. Industry experts from Brazil and the European Union will discuss global agricultural trade negotiations on the other panel.

The core of GrainWorld lies in its market outlook sessions for wheat, oilseeds, pulse and special crops, coarse grains, barley, beef and pork. These presentations are designed to help participants understand what lies ahead for the next crop year, to encourage sound business decision-making.

"This is a chance to cultivate ideas and focus on positive opportunities," said Watts adding that GrainWorld was established in the early 1990s after the need for a Prairie agricultural summit was recognized. "By putting our minds together and sharing a common goal, we can build a brighter future for our industry."
