CWB celebrates 70th birthday; over one billion tonnes of grain sold since 1935

July 5, 2005

Winnipeg - The Canadian Wheat Board, a farmer-controlled marketing corporation that sells wheat, durum wheat, malting barley and feed barley on behalf of Prairie producers, turns 70 today. The CWB said it will mark the occasion through a series of farmer, customer and employee events throughout the 2005-06 crop year, which runs from August 1, 2005 to July 31, 2006.

"This is an important milestone for the organization," said Ken Ritter, chair of the board of directors. "We will be integrating a 70th anniversary theme into all CWB events that are held during the 2005-06 crop year. We will also organize some specific celebrations of our anniversary, which may include events to be held at our Beijing and Tokyo offices."

Adrian Measner, President and CEO, noted the important role the CWB has played in Prairie agriculture over the past 70 years. "The CWB was created out of the movement of Prairie producers to wrest some control over the marketing of their grain from multinational grain companies," he said. "For 70 years the CWB has served farmers well by marketing over one billion tonnes of grain to domestic and international customers. The CWB is well positioned to build on this partnership in the years ahead."

Controlled by western Canadian farmers, the CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. As one of Canada's biggest exporters, the Winnipeg-based organization sells grain to more than 70 countries and returns all sales revenue, less the costs of marketing, to Prairie farmers.
