What is Adventure Training? Image: Adventure Training Crest

Adventure training is defined as any activity that is adventurous in nature such as canoeing, kayaking, abseiling, hiking, or mountaineering, just to name a few! <More>

Each adventure training activity will introduce cadets to many skills such as navigation, trekking, leadership, planning, and teamwork. Adventure training is an invigorating journey that uses the outdoors as a classroom. The lakes, mountains, forests and rivers provide the mental and physical challenges. Some of these challenges will be physical-hiking up a peak, portaging a canoe through the wilderness. Other challenges are more subtle, such as developing leadership, and team building skills.

Aim
The aim of adventure training is to develop leadership, team-building skills and physical endurance through a challenging outdoor program. The main objectives of adventure training are to provide mental stimulation by exposure to the perception of risk, strengthen mental and physical endurance and stimulate initiative and teamwork.

Scope of Regional Adventure Training
Adventure training is provided to Silver and Gold Star level cadets as part of mandatory support training. The adventure training program is delivered in terms of familiarization, basic, intermediate and advanced skill training.

Silver Star cadets participate in rope building, canoeing, orienteering, abseiling and leadership activities through their weekend of training. This training enables the cadets an opportunity to learn and apply the skills that will be required for future activities offered at the Gold Star level.

Gold Star cadets improve their advanced skills through similar activities as the Silver Star level. Emphasis at this level of training is highly placed on leadership, team-building and decision-making skills.

Additional Support

In addition to Mandatory Support to units, the Adventure Training Centres may be called upon to offer additional support. Green and Red star adventure training is the responsibility of the Local Headquarters. However, some units do not have access to instructors, equipment, or training areas required to conduct local or unit adventure training. Assistance and guidance will be provided to ensure Local Headquarters adventure training is safe and the productive. Possible activities for Green and Red stars could include hiking and backpacking, canoeing, orienteering and/or mountain biking.

NSCE and Master Cadets will be eligible to assist at Adventure Training Centres and for participation in Regional and National Expeditions.
