On Saturday, September 23, 2006, Unit Commanding Officers (CO) from across Manitoba met at 17 Wing Winnipeg to discuss an array of topics while attending the Regional Cadet Support Unit (Prairie) Detachment (Det) Winnipeg Det Commander's conference.  The annual meeting provides the local unit CO up-to-date information on the many projects and upcoming events that affect their cadet units.  One of the key presentations at this year's conference was the Cadet Program Update.  "It is really important that everyone is aware of the changes that will be coming with the new program, and this is the perfect time to get that information out and let people ask the really important questions," said Capt Chris Fenlon-Macdonald, Common Training Officer at Det Winnipeg.  Group presentations on a variety of topics filled the morning agenda followed by lunch at the Officers Mess.   The afternoon portion of conference was set aside for element specific workshops.

Air Cadets Explore Alberta’s Heritage

Five hundred and twenty five Air Cadets and officers from across the province explored Alberta’s history as part of Exercise “Science and Heritage” during the month of October. Participating cadets visited one of the two venues offered as part of the exercise: the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller AB or the Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin AB. In total, 34 units participated in this years event put on by Detachment Edmonton.

On Friday, 15 September 2006, Region Cadet Support Unit (Prairie) Detachment Regina bid farewell to Area Cadet Assistant (Air), WO Len Volman, during a retirement dinner that was held at H.M.C.S. QUEEN in his honour.  Present for this special occasion were many friends including Major Pete Garton - Detachment Commander, members of the Detachment, League representatives and WO Volman's family.

Sixteen air cadets have just completed their Power Flying Scholarship course at Harv’s Air in St. Andrews this week. The have all passed their exams and flight tests, and have earned their Transport Canada Private Pilots License.

“Being at the right place at the right time” is a common phrase that certainly came to the minds of three CIC officers as they met Prime Minister Stephen Harper on May 31, 2006 at the cadet Hangar in Gimli MB.

SURVIVAIR 2006 A HUGE SUCCESS

Three hundred Air Cadets from across Alberta came together this May Long Weekend to participate in the SurvivAir 2006 Competition held at Cadet Camp Wright. This year, 30 out of the 42 air cadet units in the province took part in the challenge. Major Ken Rowley, Competition Director stated, “the competition gets bigger and better every year!”

Sea Cadets Square off in Wainwright

Over 450 Alberta Sea Cadets and 50 officers converged on CFB Wainwright to participate in the annual Alberta Sea Cadets Sports and Drill Competition held June 2-4, 2006. The annual competition allows sea cadets from all 17 Alberta Sea Cadet Corps to compete against each other in a variety of activities including basketball, volleyball, soccer, range, drill, challenge-obstacle course and the cadets’ favorite, the tug-o-war competition.

OTTAWA:- Canada’s innovative and growing aviation and aerospace industries are looking for new recruits and have found a pool of over 25,000 youth who are already interested in all things “air”. The Air Cadet League of Canada (ACLC) is pleased to announce that memoranda of understanding have been signed with both the Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council (CAMC) and the Canadian Aerospace Associations Human Resource Alliance (CAAHRA). These signings are a significant step on the part of their participants to work together to encourage young people to choose careers in aviation and aerospace.

AIR CADET LEAGUE OF CANADA ROLLS OUT MEDAL

OTTAWA- The Air Cadet League of Canada is announcing the distribution of the “Air Cadet Service Medal” awarded to cadets who have completed four (4) continuous years of service with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The service medals will be distributed to the provincial committees within the next few weeks, commencing with the smaller Maritime Provinces.

The zone style Run and Shoot Biathlon Stage II will be introduced this fall. This updated program will encourage and allow more cadets to participate at the local unit in this fun and challenging sport.

The Air Cadet League of Canada has recently added two additional scholarship awards for eligible cadets. The newest scholarships for post-secondary education are the Leonard and Kathleen Birchall Award and the Robert and Mary Dale Award.

Revised pay system for the reserves (RPSR)

National initiatives are underway to ensure that Cadet Instructor Cadre personnel receive representation in the forthcoming Reserve Pension. One of these initiatives includes paying all CIC, CI and Staff Cadets on the RPSR.

Commander 1 CAD is a formation commander with the powers and jurisdiction of an Officer Commanding a Command (OCC). In addition to 1 CAD, the Commander also commands the Canadian NORAD Region, the Trenton Search and Rescue Region and the Prairie Region Cadets.

Major-General W. A. Howard, CMM, CM, CD, QC, Colonel Commandant Royal Canadian Army Cadets from 1974 to 1979 has established annual awards for outstanding army cadets known as "The Major-General W. A. Howard Awards." The awards are administered and the winners selected by a Committee established by the Army Cadet League of Canada.
