Air Cadets Explore Alberta’s Heritage

Five hundred and twenty five Air Cadets and officers from across the province explored Alberta’s history as part of Exercise “Science and Heritage” during the month of October. Participating cadets visited one of the two venues offered as part of the exercise: the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller AB or the Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin AB. In total, 34 units participated in this years event put on by Detachment Edmonton.

Cadets Honoured at Award Ceremony

Seven cadets from the Winnipeg area and Gimli, MB, received their Duke of Edinburgh's Awards on Thursday, October 12, 2006 at the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Ceremony (Manitoba Division) held in Winnipeg, MB.

Thank You WO Volman

On Friday, 15 September 2006, Region Cadet Support Unit (Prairie) Detachment Regina bid farewell to Area Cadet Assistant (Air), WO Len Volman, during a retirement dinner that was held at H.M.C.S. QUEEN in his honour.  Present for this special occasion were many friends including Major Pete Garton - Detachment Commander, members of the Detachment, League representatives and WO Volman's family.

Cadet Honour Band of Prairie Region accepting Applications

The Cadet Honour Band of Prairie Region is now accepting audition tapes for the 2007 training session.  This year's event is scheduled for March 23 through April 1, 2007.

Third Year Success for Exercise Grey Wolf

Her Royal Highness, the Countess of Wessex was in Southern Alberta June 4, 2006 to accept the honour of becoming the Colonel-In-Chief of the South Alberta Light Horse Regiment (SALH) based in Medicine Hat, AB.

Provincial Regatta Showcases Prairie Sailors

The weekend of June 17 – 18, 2006 brought clear skies and gentle winds along the shores of Lake Winnipeg, Canada’s sixth Great Lake.  Almost perfect conditions for this year’s Manitoba and NW Ontario Regatta.

Final Days of Flight

Sixteen air cadets have just completed their Power Flying Scholarship course at Harv’s Air in St. Andrews this week. The have all passed their exams and flight tests, and have earned their Transport Canada Private Pilots License.

A Chance Meeting

“Being at the right place at the right time” is a common phrase that certainly came to the minds of three CIC officers as they met Prime Minister Stephen Harper on May 31, 2006 at the cadet Hangar in Gimli MB.

SURVIVAIR 2006 A HUGE SUCCESS

Three hundred Air Cadets from across Alberta came together this May Long Weekend to participate in the SurvivAir 2006 Competition held at Cadet Camp Wright. This year, 30 out of the 42 air cadet units in the province took part in the challenge. Major Ken Rowley, Competition Director stated, “the competition gets bigger and better every year!”

Sea Cadets Square off in Wainwright

Over 450 Alberta Sea Cadets and 50 officers converged on CFB Wainwright to participate in the annual Alberta Sea Cadets Sports and Drill Competition held June 2-4, 2006. The annual competition allows sea cadets from all 17 Alberta Sea Cadet Corps to compete against each other in a variety of activities including basketball, volleyball, soccer, range, drill, challenge-obstacle course and the cadets’ favorite, the tug-o-war competition.

Edmonton (AB) - Top Army Cadet drill teams in Alberta competed for the Colonel Frank Kozar Cup at the third annual Alberta Army Cadet Provincial Drill Competition held on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at Jefferson Armouries in Edmonton Alberta.

The applause was thundering as 700 people stood up from their seats and cheered the Cadet Honour Band of Prairie Region’s concert performance on Saturday, April 1, 2006 at Grace Presbyterian Church in Calgary Alberta.

Landmine Foundation Essay Contest

The Canadian Landmine Foundation formally launched the "Mark R. Isfeld Essay Contest" on 22 November 2005. This contest is for students between ages 12 and 16 in which they have to explain what it takes to be a peacekeeper.

Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council - Air Cadets

OTTAWA:- Canada’s innovative and growing aviation and aerospace industries are looking for new recruits and have found a pool of over 25,000 youth who are already interested in all things “air”. The Air Cadet League of Canada (ACLC) is pleased to announce that memoranda of understanding have been signed with both the Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council (CAMC) and the Canadian Aerospace Associations Human Resource Alliance (CAAHRA). These signings are a significant step on the part of their participants to work together to encourage young people to choose careers in aviation and aerospace.

AIR CADET LEAGUE OF CANADA ROLLS OUT MEDAL

OTTAWA- The Air Cadet League of Canada is announcing the distribution of the “Air Cadet Service Medal” awarded to cadets who have completed four (4) continuous years of service with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The service medals will be distributed to the provincial committees within the next few weeks, commencing with the smaller Maritime Provinces.

Music Cadets Salute Veterans

Residents from Red Deer, AB enjoyed a sunny afternoon in the park on Saturday August 13, 2005 while cadets from the music training wing of Penhold Air Cadet Summer Training Centre performed an outdoor concert in honour of the Year of the Veteran.

Hundreds of people took to their seats on Saturday April 2, 2005 at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church in Winnipeg MB and enjoyed an evening of music presented by the Cadet Honour Band of Prairie Region.

Biathlon Program Update

The zone style Run and Shoot Biathlon Stage II will be introduced this fall. This updated program will encourage and allow more cadets to participate at the local unit in this fun and challenging sport.

Fortress Opens the Doors

UPDATE: The Commanding Officer of RCSU(Pra) has extended the deadline for input of cadet records into Fortress. Pay submissions for Fortress data entry will be accepted until 1 May 05. There will be no further extensions.

RCA Ops O Promoted

LCol Dean Gillrie, Region Cadet Air Operations Officer was promoted to the rank of LCol on January 20, 2005 at the RCSU (Pra) HQ in Winnipeg, Manitoba. LCol Gillrie was presented his rank by MGen C.Bouchard, 1 Canadian Air Division commander.

New Scholarships for Air Cadets

The Air Cadet League of Canada has recently added two additional scholarship awards for eligible cadets. The newest scholarships for post-secondary education are the Leonard and Kathleen Birchall Award and the Robert and Mary Dale Award.

Employment opportunities for registered civilian nurses are available for summer 2005 at various RCSU (Pra) cadet summer training centres.

2005 Army Cadet Domestic Expedition

The 2005 Army Cadet Domestic Expedition will be held in Jasper Alberta September 23 to October 4, 2005. Jasper, Alberta is the heart of Jasper National Park, the largest and most northernly of Canada's Rocky Mountain national parks.

Revised pay system for the reserves (RPSR)

National initiatives are underway to ensure that Cadet Instructor Cadre personnel receive representation in the forthcoming Reserve Pension. One of these initiatives includes paying all CIC, CI and Staff Cadets on the RPSR.

Four Decades of Service

CWO J.C. Hannem was presented with his third Canadian Forces Decoration (CD) Clasp at a ceremony held at the Regional Cadet Support Unit (Prairie) Headquarters in Winnipeg on November 8, 2004, in recognition of 43 years of service to the Canadian Forces (CF).

600 Sqn’s hosting of 977 Army Cadets during ICE visit

Fishing fun – Atikokan’s Air Cadet squadron hosted 29 Army Cadets and their staff from Montreal during the Thanksgiving weekend as part of the Interprovincial Cadet Exchange (ICE) program. Appointment as Master Cadet

The Master Cadet Appointment is recognition for Royal Canadian Army Cadet training. It combines an assessment of a cadet at the cadet corps and during summer training at a Cadet Summer Training Centre.

UPDATED 05 Jan 05 The Cadet Honour Band of Prairie Region music concentration will be held March 25 - April 3,2005 in Gimli Manitoba. In order to be selected for this event you must meet the following criteria:

Major-General J.J.C. (Charlie) Bouchard, OMM, CD

Commander 1 CAD is a formation commander with the powers and jurisdiction of an Officer Commanding a Command (OCC). In addition to 1 CAD, the Commander also commands the Canadian NORAD Region, the Trenton Search and Rescue Region and the Prairie Region Cadets.

Actions of Bravery Earn Award

LCol David MacGillivary, Commanding Officer RCSU (Pra) was awarded the St. John Provincial Certificate of Commendation with Silver Pin in recognition of his lifesaving attempt in January 2004.

Canada Day Parade

On July 1, 2004, officers and cadets from 878 RCACS took part in Canada Day parades in both Banff and Canmore Alberta.

Major-General W. A. Howard, CMM, CM, CD, QC, Colonel Commandant Royal Canadian Army Cadets from 1974 to 1979 has established annual awards for outstanding army cadets known as "The Major-General W. A. Howard Awards." The awards are administered and the winners selected by a Committee established by the Army Cadet League of Canada.
