Postal Boxes: a secure way to receive your mail
Because a Postal Box is a locked compartment within a postal outlet, to which you and the outlet’s Postmaster have access, it provides a convenient and secure way for you to receive your mail.
But why would I want a Postal Box?
There are a lot of compelling reasons! You get all the convenience, security, and privacy you require at an affordable price. And if you own a business of any size or expect larger volumes of mail than your residential mailbox can handle, a Postal Box rental is indispensable.
Three popular reasons for renting a Postal Box are:
- To give a private mailing address to homebased and small businesses
- To give college and university students a private mailing address when they are away from home
- To give frequent travellers and snowbirds a secure address while they’re away
How does a Postal Box rental work?
Any mail addressed to your Postal Box address will be deposited in your Postal Box, except for those items which require a signature or are too large to fit in the compartment. In these cases, your mail is still secure. A card will be left in your Postal Box advising you of the situation, and you can simply pick up the mail from the Retail Counter at the postal outlet.
With almost 4,600 locations and five different sizes of Postal Box compartments, as well as a bag service for larger volumes of mail, Canada Post Postal Boxes are a great way to conduct more confidential or sensitive correspondence, or to run a small business.
How do I know which Postal Box size is right for me?
The most important consideration is what size of mail or how much mail you expect to receive. You can choose an appropriately sized Postal Box from the chart below. The Small size is ideal for lettersize envelopes, while the Medium size accommodates letter, legal, and large brown envelopes. Large to XX-Large takes virtually all size letters, envelopes, and various sized parcels.

What’s a key deposit?
The key deposit, $11.70, includes two keys for each Postal Box. For a 24-hour security access key (where available), which allows you to pick up your mail at any time, the fee is $15.90. Both these fees are subject to applicable taxes, and are refundable if you cancel your Postal Box rental and return all keys intact.
Yes! I’m convinced, but how do I rent a Postal Box?
It’s easy and confidential. Just visit your nearest postal outlet, fill out an "Application for Post Office Box" and pay the appropriate fee.
What if, later on, I want to cancel my Postal Box?
Again, it’s easy and confidential. You can cancel your Postal Box rental at any time. The fee representing the first three months is not refundable. Consult your local postal outlet for more information.
*These rates are applicable when customers wish to have an additional service to the basic no- charge service provided by Canada Post. Rates are subject to changes without notice. For urban and rural areas, please consult your local outlet.
