Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, December 6, 2006

December 5, 2006

“The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, is a call for action to all of us to eliminate all forms of discrimination towards women and to bring together women and men in the name of equality.

The commemorative gestures taking place throughout the country on this day remind us of the tragic events of December 6, 1989, at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal and of the irreparable impact it had on our collective innocence. They provide an opportunity to reflect on the discriminatory violence with which women are faced and to remember those who died because of it.

My thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims whose sudden and shocking death rendered a profound loss for all Canadians. May those still carrying the burden of this day find the hope and strength to conquer their grief.”
