Governor General to unveil the Valiants Memorial in Ottawa

OTTAWA—Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, will unveil the new Valiants Memorial on Sunday, November 5, 2006, at 1 p.m.  The unveiling ceremony will launch Veterans’ Week and will take place at Confederation Square in Ottawa, at the intersection of Elgin and Wellington Streets, near the Sappers Staircase. The Governor General will deliver short remarks.

The Memorial is a collection of nine busts and five full-size statues of individuals who have made a significant contribution to Canada’s military history. These heroes played an important role in the French Regime, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the First World War and the Second World War. The Memorial is designed to highlight the profound influence that war has had on the evolution of Canada.

MEDIA ARE ASKED TO BE IN PLACE BY 12:30 PM.  THE PUBLIC IS WELCOME TO ATTEND THE UNVEILING CEREMONY.  THE EVENT WILL BE HELD RAIN OR SHINE.
