Citizens of Hartley Bay to receive the Governor General’s Commendation for Outstanding Service

April 28, 2006

OTTAWA–On behalf of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, the Honourable Iona Campagnolo, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, will present the residents of Hartley Bay with the Governor General’s Commendation for Outstanding Service on Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at the Gitga’at Cultural Centre in Hartley Bay. The commendation honours the exceptional contribution of individuals or groups to their community.

“On behalf of the people of Canada, I sincerely thank the residents of Hartley Bay, who, without knowing what to expect, pulled together and did all they could have done to rescue and care for the people on board The Queen of the North,” said the Governor General. “These types of actions have the power to change the course of a life.”

The commendation reads:

The Governor General’s Commendation
for Outstanding Service is awarded to
The Citizens of Hartley Bay, British Columbia

In appreciation of their outstanding efforts to save and assist the passengers and crew members of The Queen of the North following its sinking off the coast of British Columbia on March 22, 2006.

Undeterred by the magnitude of the disaster, the residents of the community of Hartley Bay responded quickly to the call for help, rescuing victims with their fishing boats and providing safety and comfort in the warmth of their community centre. The villagers of Hartley Bay demonstrated initiative, selflessness and an extraordinary commitment to the well-being of others, for which they can be very proud. The entire community, from children to elders, is to be commended for its tremendous spirit and the remarkable example it has set.

This type of commendation is presented very rarely. Past recipients include firefighters for their tremendous efforts battling the fires in B.C.’s Southern Interior in the summer of 2003 and members of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress for the role they played in organizing a 500-person election observation mission to monitor the rerun of the second round of voting in the Ukrainian presidential election on December 26, 2004.
